Best Spam mail I've gotten in a while!
Tel of M. Cenani. It was with great difficulty that he was admitted to
his presence, and then he was ordered away. But he persisted in
speaking; and after apologizing for his mistake, he returned the money.
The banker asked him if he knew that he was no judge of cloth. Colbert
assured him that it was not worth more than eight crowns. "And you might
easily have kept this money for yourself." "I never thought of that,
sir," replied the young man. "But, if you had thought of it?" inquired
the banker. "It was quite impossible, sir, that such an idea could come
into my head. I should as soon have thought of carrying off all that you
have here." "Suppose I should make you a present of this money that you
have returned to me with such admirable integrity?" "What right have I
to it? And why should you give it to me? I would not take it, sir." "You
are a fine fellow and an honest fellow," said the banker, and inquired
his name. The conversation was suddenly broke off by the arrival of the
banker's carriage. As young Colbert went out, he was seized by the
collar, by his enraged master, who abused him in the most frantic
manner, and dismisse
No idea what any of that was about. If you're in Galway tonight I'll be hammering out tunes for a 5 hour marathon Christmas Eve Eve in Kelly's. Here are a few mad decent teeeeuuuunes like ...
Nina Simone - Funkier Than A Mosquitos Tweeter
Kool And The Gang - Celebration
Junior Senior - Move Your Feet

Mixtape
I heard Cameron Crowe makes a mix tape every month. I like that idea. An actual cassette. Recently I bought Iron Maiden's Fear Of The Dark on tape in a charity shop. I put it on in the kitchen while making dinner. Makes you listen to a whole album. I'm a skipper, it's an illness, this might help. Burn albums I buy to tape? Might be an idea.
It'll mainly be new music, but I'll include new discoveries too, or songs I've revisited in the month.

Happy Christmas folks, iTest's Christmas special!
I put together three hours of some of my favourite Christmas tunes. It was fun. I played Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name three or four times cos it had just been declared Christmas no. 1 in the UK. Shockingly exciting! Not going to get into the in's and out's of it now, but to sum it all up, I don't give a fuck where the momey went, Sony are welcome to it, €50,000 was donated to charity, it was done for fun, and it was indeed funny. Two more songs that I think sound alike
Here are two songs I think sound alike. Am I being silly?
The Go Find - Everybody Knows It's Gonna Happen, Only Not Tonight
The XX - Crystalised
Turbo Fruits
I just found a band that I really like. I'll be playing them on the radio show at 6 on i102-104 this evening. I'll be playing them in Substance on Thursday. Now that's some cross promotion, boo yeah!
From the ashes of Be Your Own Pet comes Turbo Fruits, delightfully named, even more delightfully fast and dirty pop n' roll gems
Enjoy these songs!

Turbo Fruits - Naked With You

Good n' fucken heavy like!!
I was in my sitting room trying to watch the budget, trying because all it seemed like was a bad economics lesson when you know the punch-line will be, eh sorry lads we're up shit creek and our rich mates took the paddle and fucked off elsewhere! So booze is coming down a whopping 13cent, fags not changing but I don't mind cos I'm buying them on the chaep anyway, and the dole only coming down a wee bit, not tres bad.
So to drown out the excess shite I've found a few heavy tunes
Liars have just dropped their first tune in over 2 years, it's the first single from Sisterworld which is coming out on March 9th 2010. It's lovely and dark, and then turns eeeevil!
Liars - Scissors
This Fucked Up song is two or three years old but was originally a B-Side but for now is the first song to be released on a nice Fucked Up package out on a double CD of hard to find tracks out January 26th. I really like this band, it's listenable hard core, and I hope that's not an insult. While they are NME approved which would usually be an immediate turn off they're head and shoulders above the likes of Gallows
Fucked Up - Neat Parts
And earlier when I was searching for Fucked Up I found a song by that name from 1998, sounds like the kind of thing I was listening to when I was a dirty little skater!
Sloppy Seconds - So Fucked Up

Sunday Dec. 20th from 6-9p.m I'll be playing 3 hours of my favourite Christmas music, not the usual rubbish however, I've been collecting some mad shite over the past few weeks,
Saturday Dec. 26th from 2-6p.m I'll be concluding the Top 100 of the 2000's,
And on Sunday Dec. 27th I'll be running through some of the better tunes of the past year,
If you're near your radio/internet it's on i102-104fm in the west of Ireland and i102104.ie online
If you'd like to suggest anything I'd love some help with any of the shows, my e-mail is joshclarke@iradio.ie or leave a comment below. I've been building a youtube playlist. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=40FD454AA6DE13CB

Stress!!
Stress!! are a bunch of Galway dudes who've been promoting Irish and international acts in Galway for the past three years. Originally based in the beautiful and sorely missed De Burgos, a 16th Century wine cellar that fell foul of arsehole neighbours and the dreaded fire officer. They've moved recently to Kelly's on Bridge St. and have hosted an impressive succession of gigs over the past few weeks including a Nick Cave tribute night with local boy Vertigo Smyth and Gareth Dickson, guitarist with Vashti Bunyan, the Homelights Tour with Adrian Crowley, Alisdair Roberts and James Yorkston and this Saturday, Adebisi Shank with support from C!ties.
On top of promoting local and Irish talents like Vince MacMahon DJ's, So Cow, Junior 85 and And So I Watched You From Afar they've hosted a DJ Set from Jeffrey Dammers of the Specials, LA's Daedelus and UK Hip Hop magicians Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip TWICE!!
Jonny and Tony from STRESS!! came in last week to host their own hour of music, this is what they played, you can download the whole thing at the end!
Vertigo Smyth - Comfort Me
So Cow - Greetings
Northstation - Wagtail
And So I Watched You From Afar - The Voiceless
Heliopause - Maybe Later
Flying Buttresses - ??
Jimmy Penguin - Philedephia Sunrise

Two Tuesday Tunes
I came across two gems yesterday while bopping through a mountain of CD's and mp3 blogs with my housemate Brian who's got killer taste and is a massive Adebisi Shank fan
Adebisi Shank - Oyasumi is a new tune I assume, it's not on their album This Is An Album By A Band Called Adebisi Shank, it's really flipping funky and a great start to a week in which I DJ at one of their shows (Finbar Hoban Presents ... at Bar Ritz in Castlebar Co. Mayo on Friday) and then go see them again on Saturday in the club I run my Thursday night clubnight (Kelly's Bridge St. Galway) with C!ties from Ennis before Giganic Club. A really exciting band, amazing live and well worth a look for anyone near Castlebar or Galway this weekend
...and while you're at it enjoy this free Adebisi Shank Christmas song!
http://adebisishank.bandcamp.com/
Jonsi - Boy Lilikoi is the first solo effort (bar the Jonsi And Alex album last year with his partner Alex) from Sigur Ros frontman Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson. It's all leading up to Go which is due out March 22nd 2010. It's dreamy but not in an annoying #ly vague way, there's a lot of meat on this tune, definitely a cracker!
Boo yeah, ever and out!
Sunday 6th December's iTest Playlist
Got a wee confession, the show wasn't live, I recorded it Saturday night cos I went to The Pogues, who were amazing, but since 99% of the texts that come in involve some manner of abuse (wot d fuk iz dis shite ply lady gaga) it's no biggie the odd time!

Vitalic - Your Disco Song
I kicked off with the full 7 minutes of this acid-pop remix of M's Pop Muzik, famously used as the intro music for U2's Zoo tour an a darn catchy uplifting piece of cheese, I'll have it edited down as an intro for next weeks show, the little girls voice saying "let's talk about pop music" would sound sweet to start the show I reckon!
M - Pop Muzik (Tolga Edit)
Owen Pallett aka Final Fantasy, the genius that is has a new tune out, it's set to appear on his eagerly anticipated Heartlands album which will be out January 12th. If you ever get to see him live do go, a pretty special occasion
Final Fantasy - Lewis Takes Action
Shout Out Louds are a wonderful Swedish band who came to my attention through a song called Time Left For Love which was one of my musical highlights of 2007, well they've this new single out which will feature on Work which is out February 23rd
Shout Out Louds - Walls
The second of two new Hot Chip tunes to surface from One Life Stand which is due out February 8h. It sounds pretty damn good so far. Hooray!
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
A song from last year admittedly but this remix puts a nice slant on one of my favourite songs of all of 2008
Soko - I'll Kill Her (JD's Killer Mix)
Another backplaylist, November 8th

New Vampire Weekend Pt. 3
The first new Vampire Weekend tune we heard that would be on the new Album Contra was White Sky, pretty good but a weak live recoring, then the first single Horchata which was brilliant! A good live version of Cousins dropped the other day which was very exciting and then this morning I got my hands on the studio version, not a leak or anything it's out today. The quality's iTunes-ish so no radio/club play for it yet but that's cos I haven't gotten out of bed yet and bought the single in the music shop downstairs. For the moment, this is Cousins, from Contra which will be out January 12th

College radio
I started out my (still short but getting there) radio "career" on college radio in Galway in a lovely little thrown together station called Flirt fm. It was, and still is run my two paid staff and over 100 volunteers and you're guaranteed to hear some damn fine music no matter when you tune in. For a station run by amateurs it's gone some excellent broadcasting and is always worth a listen. Quite a few of Galway's top DJ's have shows at night on the themed evenings, Monday is rock and metal, Tuesday has Indie, Wednesday is Leftfield, Thursday is Electronic/Techno treats and Friday brings hip hop and soul, all underground, all well thought out by people who really give a shit about their music and most importantly all good.
I had a listen in this morning and despite fumbling with mics and some awkward silences the entertainment was still there and the playlisted music is the finest you're going to hear on the airwaves, put together every month by Paula Healy, station manager. I was on Flirt for just over a year, trying my hand at as many shows as I could, talking a shocking amount of nonsense and at least once going straight from a summer beach party to the breakfast show at 8a.m. All of the playlists are on the website (flirtfm.ie) and looking back over the playlists during my time there I got tad nostalgic.
Here are a few of the gems I would never have heard if I hadn't been in there (as a first year college student I was still hanging on to my RAWK!!! roots, going to Cuba nightclub for a fix of AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine and Foo Fighters) It was being exposed to a lot of this "indie" stuff that forced me to broaden my horizons.
Common ft. Lily Allen - Drivin' Me Wild

Vampire Weekend - Bryn
And a few I played a lot of at the time for whatever reason
Alabama 3 - Mao Tse Tung Said (Radio K Edit)
King Missile - Jesus Was Way Cool
Messiah J And The Expert - When The Bull Gores The Matador
Playlist for Sunday November 15th
I got listenership figures for the show on Thursday, absolutely delighted, I can't belive that thousands of people would tune into a show on a Sunday evening that in reality is a complete mess! No features, no structure, just loads of music that you won't hear on Irish radio. So thanks to everyone for listening!
Lot to be said for ignoring Lady Gaga For three hours. Or completely. Just a thought.
Before I continue, I have bads news for anyone who hadn't heard. First off Baria Qureshi, guitarist and keyboard player with The XX (Weds 16th Dec in Roisin Dubh) has quit the band citing exhaustion, they will continue as a three piece.
And in much sadder news Jerry Fuchs, drummer with !!! and touring drummer with MSTRKRFT and LCD Soundsystem died last week after falling down an elevator shaft after a party. If you never heard !!! check them out. A fucking excellent band.

Indie Christmas #2
Much like certain shopping centres, carbonated beverage companies and national postal services I'm thinking ahead this Christmas. Last year I put together an hour of Have Yourself An Indie Merry Christmas on the radio show. I want to go full three hours of funny takes on Christmas songs.
Here are a few of my favourites so far, I'll be on the look out for loads more over the next few weeks and I'd love some help, if you find anything drop me a link on the comments, on joshclarke@iradio.ie or on the facebook pages

Follow this link if you haven't already and download Girl Talk's Feed The Animals,
It's a spectacularly well thought out mess of some of the greatest and some of the worst songs of all time, it came out last year and I can guarantee it will make your day every few weeks. It's made mine as I sit feeling sorry for myself on the couch of a Saturday night. From Souljah Boy to Nirvana through Aphex Twin, Soul II Soul and hundreds of tracks you've never heard but it doesn't matter!

...because the bird is the word
The Trashmen - Surfin' Bird
Got DJ Yoda's How To Cut And paste The 80's, there was a snippit of this track in it and then I found it on Pitchforks top 500 songs of all time

Had a lovely evening yesterday. It involved this song
The Drifters - Up On The Roof

Originals of covers ... if you know what I mean!
Didn't realise this was the original til today
Otis Redding - Respect
Northern Soul classic was given a dark 80's makeover by Soft Cell and later by Marilyn Manson
Gloria Jones - Tainted Love
For any Irish person over 18 this will bring back memories of Mark McCabe's Maniac 2000. Fun fact: The 4th biggest selling Irish single of all time!
Michael Sembello - Maniac
Sugababes covered this after it appeared on a Lynx ad. Fun fact: Ernie K. Doe went on to present radio shows on various new Orleans radio stations, frequently promoting his own music, wearing a cape and declaring himself "Emperor Of The Universe"
Ernie K. Doe - Here Come The Girls
I've decided I'd finally like to know what Battles were on about
The real lyrics for Battles - Atlas apparently
People won't be people when they hear this sound
That's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town
People won't be people, no
The people won't be people when they hear this sound
Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The kitchen is the cook
The scissors are the barbers
The singer is a crook
The chorus, full of actors*
Many MANY drunken nights dancing to this song trying to sing along! I suppose that was the fun of it, and god knows the next time this comes on in the pub I'll have forgotten the real lyrics and will be back to singing "people will be people when they eat this sandwich"

Movember
November has started, which means for the silly amoung us, Movember has started. Yes, daft bastards all over the world have forgone giving money to hyperactive charity mugging pricks on the street in favour of growing a moustache, talking about it and demanding donations for mens charities. In Ireland we'll be raising money for prostate cancer.
Movember started up 5 years ago in a bar in Australia with 30 dudes growing a "mo" and raising money for charity. Since then it's spread worldwide, with €14 million being raised last year.
If you want to get involved sign up on movember.com and get growing! At the end of the month parties will be held with all of the dudes involved dressing up to match what their moustache has become, fun times while doing a good thing and looking ridiculous.
Nirvana - Mr. Moustache
Glen Hansard ... ROBBED!!!
Found a band called Brakes from Brighton today. I'd heard of them before and they've a new album out so I'd a listen to a few tracks. While listening to this little number Brakes - Heard About Your Band I thought, well that sounds rather familiar. Rather similar to this Am I being silly? Does anyone care? Glen has a fucking Oscar anyway.

Slayer - World Painted Blood out today
Slayer. The stuff of teenage nightmares are back with an album that could have been made in 1985 and that's no insult. For dudes in their late 40's to be playing this fast is incredible, for dudes who are married, have kids and are off the drugs this album is nothing short of miraculous! (Take note Metallica)
Admittedly, at the same time dudes in their late 40's still singing about serial killers, satan and war is a little juvenile but then again you've got to respect the Peter Pan Never Never Land fun of it all, plus they know that they'll probably fare better selling this to pissed off teenagers than accountants. No offence Dad.
Piss your neighbours off with these gems
Slayer - Unit
Slayer - Psychopathy Red
World Painted Blood is out today
Final Halloween Goodbye
I was at Electric Picnic in September, I was bopping along with little to do so a friend said we should check out Jaguar Skills, afterwards she was raving about it but I didn't see what the fuss was, there was far too much foghorn for me.
Earlier I was sent this link to his Halloween mix for Trevor Nelson's show on BBC Radio 1
Dude is getting a second chance from me, this mix kicks ass!
Jaguar Skills x Trevor Nelson Halloween Mix
As a final Halloween goodbye!
METAL!!!
I just googled "worst tattoo ever" ...this came up.
I do love metal, along with skateboarding it kind of defined my childhood, not this kind of metal, I liked Slayer, Metallica and Pantera.
Well that's what I told people.
