Strange Brew is ancient at this stage!
A big congratulations to gugai and all involved in Strange Brew in reaching 400 nights of celebrating up and coming bands, making CD's for everybody, silly dancing and the best of indie music.
8 years of supporting Irish and international talent should be celebrated with one hell of a night, which is exactly what is on offer this evening from 8 for FREE in Roisin Dubh in Galway's west end. If it's humanly possible, make it down and have yourself a damn good time.
Getting involved are:
...the bloody spectacular Not Squares
...Galway's finest, wierdest and bestest live Lost Chord!
...a first listen for me, and am well impressed by ... Theme Tune Boy!
...moving along to "oh my god they're about to finally release something and I can't bleeding wait" it's love of my life both personally and musically from the hills of Donegal and the slums of Tuam ...
GO PANDA GO!!!!!
We Should Be Dead in there too...
...and, The Ralphs! They've just released their debut E.P, I'll tell ye, tis sounding well, and you can hear and download the whole lot here
Daithi O Dronaigh is in too, fresh from his final place finish on Sky 1's Must Be The Music (which I went to and had a great time at, thanks for the tickets Daithi). Here's a link to a post I did about him a while back after he supported Girls, with some downloadable mp3's. Talented dude!
(still going) ...then we've Jogging! With a debut album under their belts on the unstoppable Richter Collective label and a fair few gigs in the Roisin, they're back again to rip holes in everyone's eardrums! You can listen to their debut album here, the whopper that it is.
And finally, another Galway band, The Depravations! I only managed to catch these guys live once, in The Cellar, and I was well impressed. Well constructed songs, an ability to rock out, as they say, and a great live show. Have a listen on myspace.
Not a night for a pizza and a cuddle on the couch watching Grey's Anatomy then is it?
Fair play Strange Brew, here's to another 400!
(just make sure you pester the DJ for "something everyone knows off the radio", he'd love that)

N-E-W: Grass Widow, White Denim, British Sea Power ...and some indie tourism!
I'm off today and tomorrow. So today is London exploration to the max. I'll be taking a trip to Rough Trade East and investing in a very small amount of music because I've returned to first year college levels of poverty. Rent is extortionate and on top of paying tax (which I thought was supposed to cover, ah, I dunno, things like roads, schools, water, upkeep of areas etc.) there's also corporation tax, water tax and other pain in the arse bits and bobs. That'll do on bitching about my new country for the moment.
There's a bowling alley down the road from Rough Trade I'm told and since I haven't bowled since I left home I'm getting rather excited. Regular readers may remember how much I enjoy bowling.
Then off to The Old Blue Last, the pub run by Vice Magazine, meeting a mate for a pint, and on checking the listings I'll be sticking about for this band:
Grass Widow are from San Francisco and are touring around the UK at the moment. They're part of a growing list of brilliant girl bands making dirty, spooky, 60's-ish rock n' roll (oh have I mentioned that I like Warpaint yet? Have I?). Have a listen and if you're in the East London area well I'll see you there!
Grass Widow - Shadow Alt
Other than that I've listened to the new White Denim album, it's a pay what you want album, but it's not the actual album. It's an inbetween-records-record of tracks left over from sessions, expect it sounds like it should be the actual album cos it's very good indeed. It took a while for me to get over the disappointment at it not being a snarling, thundering monster like Workout Holiday but after a few listens I like it. It's everything from country to experimental to toe-tappin' funky goodness. I've a big long review written up you can read here if you're interested.
White Denim - Our Get Alt
And the band behind one of my favourite indie albums of 2008, British Sea Power, are back with an E.P. They also had an album out last year, The Man Of Aran, which was a soundtrack to the DVD release of a 1977 documentary about the making of a fabricated documentary in 1934 about life on the Aran Islands ...which I'm going to watch soon and write about for the Book & Movie club. For the moment, here's the title track from their forthcoming (Oct. 4th) E.P. Enjoy!

Esben & The Witch's Matador debut
First listen for me to these guys. I like it. This is Esben And The Witch and here is the title track from their first release on Matador records, The Marching Song E.P.
They'd previously released a few (now sold out) 7"'s and an E.P/demo, but you'll find a good few tunes through Hype Machine, Youtube and wherever else. It's safe to expect decent things from a band who've played with the likes of The xx, Deerhunter, School Of Seven Bells and (love of my life) Warpaint.
Expect a debut album early in 2011.

N-E-W: The Casanova Wave
It's a Sunday evening and I'll be honest, I feel a little empty since finishing my Sunday evening radio show. But new music is still new music, I still love it and the blog is still go.
There is some absolute magic out and about at the moment. I've gotten my hands on new Mark Ronson, Deerhunter, The Walkmen and (oh I'm soooo excited) White Denim ...and a few more, so tomorrow is listening to music and blogging day.
For the moment though I have a wonderful Irish act I came across the other day called The Casanova Wave. The guy behind CW is a guy called Brian from Waterford, and he's just released a mini album which you can stream here, and if you like it pay €5 for. It's described in the e-mail I got as warm electronica. I can't mess with that, it's bang on the money. All I can say is it's lovely music. Imagine what Four Tet would make after waking up in a house on a hill on a tropical Island and opening the curtains. Does that make any sense? Well Brian has been kind enough to give PGTR readers a free mp3. If you like it have an aural gander at the rest of his stuff and buy his mini album on bandcamp.
The Casanova Wave - Kimota! Alt
You'll find him gigging about Waterford for the moment but can imagine further afield shall be beckoning quick lively!

Romain Gavras videos
Great article in the Guardian today on music video maker Romain Gavras. Have a read here. Then come back and experience one of the things blogs have over respected print media. Videos!
Here are some of the controversial Parisian's best works...
M.I.A - BORN FREE VIDEO OFFICIAL (real and explicit version)
Uploaded by elnino. - Music videos, artist interviews, concerts and more.
Whatever about any inability I might have to write coherently about music I wouldn't even consider starting to write about film. But these are pretty cool and thought provoking and junk. And are nice to look at.

Tunes My Mates Like vol. 3
Another round of tunes my mates like! I got more suggestions after the last post so if you want to get in on the action for the next one mailjoshclarke@gmail.com will get it right to me.
Eoin Reilly has introduced me to Carter USM. I'm glad I listened to the song before I saw what the singer looks like. What an odd man. I like this too because I now live near New Cross. I seems quite nice, my girlfriend's in college there, all the kids look cool and arty and there are some nice pubs. Just hope I don't run into Carter. Can imagine he's deteriorated even more since this video was made. I wonder if he's wearing the same jumper.
Ailbhe McMahon suggested some lady songs. Songs by ladies for ladies. Well we had some Tegan & Sarah, some Dum Dum Girls and this little piece of pop magic that I had never heard before. This is going down on my best ever 80's tunes list. It's amazing! Thanks Ailbhe!
Louise McSharry, on the ball with all things aurally wonderful has suggested what is contending in my head for best pop song this year. Mr. Mark Ronson, I wasn's so gone on some of your covers but three out of three on single releases this year, I can't wait for the album ...fun fact. Louise just got a bike. Coincidence? I think not.
Finally Conor Gilleran suggested a few, but this one caught my attention. I'd remembered listening to it and promising myself I'd come back to it. I never did. Thanks for the reminder Conor!
As I said, get involved, mailjoshclarke@gmail.com, facebook and twitter below. If I start getting good responses I might start doing themed ones!

The Ticket's top 50 British acts right now
Jim Carroll and Lauren Murphy have compiled their top 50 British acts at the moment. Have a read and call back for my rambling analysis!
READ!!
Each to their own of course, but I'm not so sure about the deservedness of M.I.A given how bad her last album was. Laura Marling comes in at number 1, I can't massively fault her but I certainly wouldn't agree with her being the top dog in British music right now.
Lauren makes an excellent point about people expecting Arctic Monkeys to continue their "cheeky chappy" persona, and while I agree that they couldn't maintain that craic, Alex Turner's lyrical excellence really doesn't excuse two frankly weak albums, compared to the raw energy of the first anyway.
Their oldie inclusions are pretty spot on, Weller, Massive Attack and Prodigy but on the newer acts included, Everything Everything, Hurts and These New Puritans go way over my head. Too much taken from golden 80's pop maybe? Floating Points and Mount Kimbie aren't hugely my bag but I can't argue that they're bringing a new and exciting sound to the table.
Gorillaz, Belle & Sebastian and Mark Ronson? Yes, yes and yes. Overall the list is damn good, and you're never going to please everyone but I felt like having a rant about it. I'd suggest Civil Civic, Robert Plant, Bombay Bicycle Club (their second album a marked improvement), Yuck and Amy Winehouse as a few off the top of my head. If you've any to suggest go to the article and leave a comment, and while you're at it if you haven't already, add Jim's blog to your bookmarks, the word on music in Ireland at the end of the day.

Kormac podcast from way back
Regular readers will be well aware of my love of Irish producer and DJ Kormac, his tunes, his Bake Sale nights and his live shows with his Big Band.
Well here is the perfect antidote to whatever you got up to last night. I'd also recommend sausage sandwiches, The Ticket section of the Irish Times, the Guardian music supplement and a scaulding hot cup of tea.
Kormac Podcast April 09 by djkormac
There's a bit of everything in there along with Kormac's trademark style and some of his own works. Listen out for the Frontier Psychiatrist a capella 11 or so minutes in. Niiiice.
This is a podcast from April 2009, but I only heard it today.

N-E-W: The Ralphs debut E.P
What do the Beach Boys, Clannad, Jackson 5 and The Ralphs have in common?
They're all excellent family bands!
The Ralphs have been together (as a band) for about two years, starting out by beefing up a few songs Jamie (singer) had written as Pogo Jamie. Two brothers, a cousin and a best buddy, they write solid indie pop songs, with clever lyrics, biting guitar and tasty basslines.
They've just released their debut E.P, 21st Century Window for free on bandcamp. Here are two to listen to now. Then follow THIS link and listen to and download the rest of it. Put it on your iPod and listen to everyday tales of fun in a rainy town.

Fun fact, Brian Kelly (aka So Cow, check him out) has written a tribute E.P to Brian Ruane, The Ralphs bassist, as The Ruanes, cos he felt sorry for him being in a family band and not being in the fmaily or something like that.

Tunes My Mates Like vol. 2
Chucked this up on facebook again. Short and sweet, Laurie Leech, curator of poetry night "The Slaughter Lounge" suggested this far out nugget of fun. Sesame Street on more drugs than usual?
And Mr. Brian Ruane has set me off on a journey of discovery on an artist I'd heard about but not heard, Robyn Hitchcock with this song.

The Wire, indeed ...plus N-E-W: Antony & The Johnsons and Megafaun
Internet is up and running tomorrow in my new London home so blogging will be back in all regularity. In saying that The Wire has taken over my life. I know I'm late to the party but I'm catching up. Three seasons in a week. Good going on my part no?!
Here's the theme tune. Each season uses a different cover of this song. This one is used in Season 2.
Tom Waits - Way Down In The Hole Alt
As regards new music I haven't been as on the ball so I've just been listening to the bigger acts with new stuff out. Tomorrow I'm back to digital crate digging! Speaking of crate digging I've found a local record store that seems to be called RECORDS. It's an absolute mess inside but I've made friends with Aidan the owner so I reckon I'll be sorting through it over the next few months, there appear to be many gems in there.
Megafaun have a new mini-LP called Hereforto. Stepping aside a minute I've got to say that while I've liked a couple of songs, the "Chillwave" movement of recent times has had me aching for music with clear beats and solidly picked notes and chords. Chillwave is fine but I get a little lost with it to be honest. This track has airy vocals and a mountain stream movement to it but is solid enough for me to enjoy. But that's just me. Solid track from a solid band with enough blips and twists to make it interesting!
Megafaun - Thereforeto Alt
Antony & The Johnsons, one of this musical time's most talented, haunting vocalists is set to release Swanlights on October 5th. It wasn't until I fell for Hercules And Love Affair that I payed deserved attention to Mr. Hegarty. This song is nice and lighthearted, a great introduction to what the new album might sound like. Sure have a listen and see what you think.
Antony & The Johnsons - I'm In Love Alt
UPDATE: In the meantime someone on facebook has kinda ruined what happens at the end of Season 5. Gutted. Ah well.

Goodbye Disconnect 4
So it's all over. Disconnect 4 are no more. The time had come, but I'll miss 'em anyway.
I arrived in Galway for college in 2006, and after dicking about in crap nightclubs with my friends for a while I started to get clued in to Galway's original music scene. At the time however there was very little happening. There were a lot of the same shitty bands that are still knocking about playing sub-Zeppelin/Kings Of Leon nonsense but very little anyone would get behind and support as their own. Apart from Disconnect 4.
As Galway consists of two colleges and a small urban centre these guys and girl were tough to miss. While the standard uniform was baggy slacks and a hoody, you'd spot these folks a mile away, nothing that would bat an eyelid in Brooklyn, London or anywhere bigger but in Galway their skinny jeans, wrecked leather jackets, fancy hairdoo's and pointy boots stood out like a donkey at Cheltenham.
While they got stick for their schtick it worked in their favour as people talk, and word of mouth in a town like Galway, I've found, is more valuable than a thousand posters for a gig or DJ set. And it worked! People went to their gigs, shuffled around a bit, went back to Keith and Fuz' (drummer and guitarist) tiny tiny flat for packed out parties and had a great time. In the meantime their songs were getting better and they were attracting the attention of everyone from Jim Carroll in the Ticket to Steve Lamacq in Radio 1 to State.ie and everyone in between, while enjoying practical patronage from Roisin Dubh.
But they've decided to call it a day. Maybe they were unlucky. Their sound was a post-80's filthy synth based atmospheric style of dancefloor indie. If they were picked up in 2006 by a small label, maybe landed a support tour to a similar bigger band they might have gone somewhere with it but it wasn't to be. They're all talented sorts. Yvonne (bass) is an amazing photographer, you can check her stuff out here. Leon (vocals and synth) is a talented graphic designer, here's some of his stuff. He'd also make a great band manager! Fuz (guitar) plays with one of Ireland's most promising bands, Lost Chord. And Keith is one of Galway's best DJ's, having played all over town and is now running a soul night in Bar 8 every Friday called Quadro.
But their legacy to Galway music can't be understated. As I said, when I began to take notice of Galway's music scene they were the only ones making any sort of noise. Now Galway's scene is thriving, and while I'm not saying it wouldn't have happened if they hadn't started it certainly didn't do any damage. Galway has a reputation as a Graveyard Of Ambition, and not without reason. It's so easy to get sucked in. You can easily bum around for ten years on the dole, and between daytime pints, beach parties, free gigs, great cheap pizza and all your friends living a stones throw from your own flat you won't notice time go past. So many talented musicians have passed off being in a band as "a bit of craic to pass the time" but D4, despite their love of fun were disciplined when it came to writing, performing and recording music. This attitude wasn't lost on many of the fine Galway bands that are still making music, playing gigs, releasing tunes and have a great future ahead of them.
And there you have it, the life and death of a good Galway band, and as I said, the time was right but I'm sorry to see them go. Fair play lads, ye stopped and nailed it.

Back!
Out of action for a few days. Electric Picnic was the best time I've had in a long time. Moving home was less fun. DJing Roisin Dubh will be lots of fun tomorrow night. Packing and moving to London won't be so good. Living in London will be the business. I hope. Lot's to do then. And once I'm settled regular blogging will be back in action.
For the moment I'm getting excited for tomorrow night. The Ralphs 21st Century Window E.P launch and myself DJing. Last set in Galway, bit of a going away do, so loads of self indulgent rock n' roll!
I've never heard this played out, would it work?

Flirt fm, summer playlist
Ireland doesn't have the culture of college radio that the U.S have, or many other places for that matter. There are a handful, mostly operating during certain weeks of the year, or at most, for a few hours a day during term time. But Galway's Flirt fm run pretty much all year round, often from 8 a.m til 4 a.m with a huge amount of live content.
It works through the huge amount of work Paula and Louise (manager and assistant manager) put in, the enthusiasm of young volunteers and the dedication of some of Galway's finest D.J's, putting shows together week in, week out, for nothing more than the satisfaction of presenting good music and making good radio.
If you're in the Galway area (they stretch as far North as Tuam sometimes) tune in on 101.3 fm or online here.
Each month, Paula makes a playlist. You can check back on the past few years here, and you'll notice, she's damn clued in! So here's this summers Flirt fm playlist, then follow the link for the station, pop it somewhere on your taskbar thingy and have a listen every now and again. And here's the schedule, I'd recommend Paul Hannon's Happy Hour, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 til 8 or for some deep housey goodness, P Disconaut and Ruari on Thursdays at 9. But you're always sure to find some interesting music. Or a discussion about library opening hours As Gaelige. Radio roulette anyone?
Here's a zip to the playlist: ZZZZZZZZZIP!
1 / Toro y Moi / Leave Everywhere
2 / Suckers / A Mind I Knew
3 / Best Coast / The Way Boys Are
4 / The National / Afraid Of Everyone
5 / Rogue Wave / Lake Michigan
6 / Squarehead / Fake Blood
7 / Ra Ra Riot / Boy
8 / The Suzan / Home
9 / Fang Island / Illinois
10 / Adebisi Shank / International Dreambeat
11 / Blood Red Shoes / Don't Ask
12 / Jamaica / Short And Entertaining
13 / The Knocks / Blackout
14 / The Rogue Element / Mistakes
15 / Maximum Balloon / Tiger
16 / Fol Chen / The Holograms (Teen Daze Remix)
17 / Magnetic Man / I Need Air
18 / School of Seven Bells / Babelonia
19 / Gold Panda / You

Can't wait for ...Electric Picnic! no. 8
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble! They seem to have adopted Ireland as second home this year, with an E.P recorded in Dublin, released on Bodytonic Records, and playing all over the country, including Galway twice at least. But are we sick of them? Feck no!
